Across ages and empires, tales of fantastical beasts colored cave walls and dripped from the lips of ancients like honey from the comb. These legends became increasingly outlandish with each telling, yet it took centuries to realize that they were untrue. Partially, at least.
You see, since the beginning of time, humans have endured through peace and famine and war; this is not uncommon knowledge. Unknown until recently, on the other hand, was that another species, homo subcinctus, (known today by the common name of Shifters) was flourishing alongside our human brethren. For millenniums, these "others" have lived without proper name or identity, but they have been mistaken for something else- monsters.
In Egypt, lion shifters were worshiped as sphinx; The Great Sphinx of Giza is one of the greatest cultural documentations of their existence. It is said that it is a representation of King Khufu, who is now believed to have been an ancient lion shifter himself. Not all shifters lived in such a life of luxury, though. Many shifters, such as wolves and snakes, were demonized as horrific man-eaters and were treated as such. For this reason, shifters all over the globe learn to hide their talents, preferring to be known in folklore rather than real life.
